Fry Club Veterans win cup

Fry Club Veterans took the Corinthian Premier Cup silverware home after they beat Real St George by the solitary goal in a fiercely contested fixture in North Bristol.

Having overcame Nailsea and Yate Town respectively in the early rounds, the team booked their place in the final in what is their debut season.

Led by seasoned Fry’s stalwart Jeff Copp, the Keynsham-based side thought they had gone ahead inside the first quarter when the evergreen Matt Grimes rounded the St George keeper, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Despite both sides offering ageing legs, the fixture was played at pace, with further chances at both ends during the first period.

Fry’s lost Joe Wescott and Chris Dauncey through injury early in the second half. But they overcame this setback to take the lead with 20 minutes left.

Matt Crewe delivered a terrific dead-ball into the opposing box and the reliable Grimes was on hand to nod the ball home with aplomb.

Substantial St George pressure followed with a barrage of attacks, but goalkeeper James Pearce was equal to it, pulling off a number of fine saves to ensure the cup returned to Cadbury’s.
