Generation game for tennis aces
FRY Tennis Club members gathered at 1pm on Saturday October 5 for the start of our doubles tournament, and the weather was kind to us again this year. The threatened rain held off just long enough for us to complete the final at around 4.30 pm.
The tournament is open to all members and this year was restricted to 12 players. The usual crop of end-of-league-season injuries limited the number of senior members available and we were lucky enough to be able to invite seven of our junior members to join those seniors who were able to play.
The ages of the players ranged from 13 to their sixties, and the tournament’s format allowed us to pair seniors with juniors, ensuring some competitive and enjoyable tennis.
With pairs comprising one senior and one junior, we were able to organise six rounds across four courts, with each match being played over four games and individuals retaining their own score. If the scores were even, the matches were decided by a single-point game. Losing pairs moved courts and swapped sides, ensuring that all players mixed well. At the end of the six rounds, the scores were totted up and the top two players on each side of the draw played a full-set final. There were three senior players with the same score in second place on their side of the draw, and the finalist was decided by comparing the number of games conceded.
The finalists on the day were Marcus, Tony, Rhys and Jo (pictured) and in a very competitive and far from one-sided final, the eventual winners were Marcus and Tony.
After the final, the winners and runners-up were presented with their prizes by tournament organiser Ann Smith.
