Festival scrapped but we'll be back
KEYNSHAM Music Festival has been cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak.
This will be the first time the summer festival has not taken place since its inception 23 years ago. But plans are already under way for the festival’s return next year.
Festival chairman Mike May said: “Over the past several weeks, our world has been turned upside down by the global coronavirus pandemic.
“Our hearts are with everyone impacted by it. It is with deep sadness that the trustees of Keynsham Music Festival have decided not to stage the 2020 festival.
“This difficult decision has been made in light of the current situation that we all face and feel together. Like many around the world, we are doing our best to quickly adjust to these complex times.
“Our volunteers have been working since last November to organise what was going to be our biggest, most diverse and most exciting festival ever.
“Every one of our suppliers has offered to carry over our deposits and current contracts until next year, for which we are very grateful.
“All trader deposits will be fully refunded in the coming days. All artists, performers, acts and traders will be rebooked for the festival in 2021.
“All of the people who work in the industry upon which the festival relies so much every year now find themselves in a very difficult and unknown future. We send our heartfelt best wishes to all of them. We will continue to monitor the situation and hope that we will be able to put on a special community event later in the year.
“As a Keynsham resident myself, I know how much the festival means to the community and the local businesses that are involved.
“It’s amazing that an event of this size and calibre is organised purely by volunteers and is a huge testament to the incredible things that can be done when local people work together. On behalf of all of the team, thank you all for your support so far. We can’t wait to back in 2021 to celebrate what will be our 25th anniversary.”
Organiser Ric Davison said: “Over the last three weeks, it became increasingly obvious that 2020's Keynsham Music Festival - classed as a "major event" in respect of a public gathering - would not be able to go ahead.
“If it was not cancelled by Government or the local authority, the chances of it going ahead with all suppliers and musicians intact was becoming slimmer. Equally, the financial loss likely for a festival cancelled at the last minute is unsustainable.
“The festival trustees met on Monday March 16 and the decision to be made was too obvious to require much discussion.”
Organisers are keen to let residents know that the Keynsham Music Festival week for 2021 has been planned for Monday June 28 to Sunday July 4. To keep up to date with plans for the 2021 festival, visit https://www.facebook.com/keynshamfest
