Some things are made to last – and a couple who have just celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in the same house they moved into in the 1950s would agree.

Jean and Vivan Beck, both 83, raised a glass to their 60th wedding anniversary with loved ones at the Dartmouth Walk house where they raised their two children and which has become the hub for the whole family.

The couple met at Hengrove Speedway track in 1953, marrying two years later on May 7 at St Anne’s Church in Bristol.

“There was no reception,” said granddaughter Lara. “Just a drink with their parents at Nan’s house and they caught the train to London the same day for their week-long honeymoon.”

The couple then lived with Vivian’s mother before moving into their current house in 1958, watching the town grow over the decades.

Vivian said: “It’s not the same feel as 50 years ago with the nice, private shops but the people are still the same and we love the sense of community in the
town.”

Today, the couple enjoy shopping together, fortnightly trips to Weston-super-Mare for fish and chips and spending time with their children, four grandchildren and great-granddaughter, with the whole family often meeting up at their Keynsham home.

And the secret to a long marriage?  Tolerance, to always keep plodding along and a good bicker everyday to clear things up, they agree. And it helps to always say “yes”, adds Vivan.

Lara added: “They are as happy now as they have ever been and are the core of our family. We all think they are an inspiration.”

The family also enjoyed a celebration at the Old Manor House to mark the anniversary.
