Keynsham Station has been given a spring clean by a team of volunteers, who spent a day clearing rubbish and weeds and planting bulbs.

The Friends of Keynsham Station – which includes members of Keynsham In Bloom and the Severnside Community Rail Partnership – met on Saturday, February 28, armed with litter pickers and black bags to get the area looking tidy.

Spring flowers in troughs are currently lining the platform, ahead of Keynsham in Bloom’s plans to create colourful floral displays for South West in Bloom’s It’s Your Neighbourhood competition.

Besides the planters, flowerbeds and art displays, a bank at the side of Platform 1 and its new access ramp will be planted with wild flower seeds.

Heather Cullimore, of Severnside Community Rail Partnership, said it would be the third year the station had entered the South West in Bloom category and would be aiming for a Level 4 after being awarded Level 3 last year.

She said: “The contest is about the cleaning up and greening up of the local environment and taking ownership. This is hugely important and we’ve seen a decrease in crime statistics – particularly vandalism – at the station since the In Bloom group began giving attention to the station.”

This month, the Keynsham In Bloom group will be holding its first AGM since becoming an independent community group, rather than a council-run initiative, and the group's officers will be elected.

The meeting on Wednesday, March 18, at 7.30pm, at Scout HQ in Ashton Way, is open to all, with new members welcome. Community groups that work with Keynsham in Bloom are also invited.
