Saltford post office to close on December 23 after move falls through

Saltford Post Office is due to close its doors two days before Christmas after plans to move the branch to McColls unexpectedly fell through last month.
The branch will remain open at its current location inside Saltford Flowers at 493 Bath Road until December 23, after which the village will have no post office service. A Post Office spokesperson said the organisation is “committed” to keeping a branch in Saltford, however.
Plans to relocate the post office just a few doors away to the McColls store at 503 Bath Road were revealed by Post Office in October when it launched a six-week consultation with customers.
It followed the decision by the current postmaster in Saltford to end their contract to run the branch. Before the six-week consultation was up last month, however, Post Office wrote to Saltford Parish Council to inform councillors that the operator at McColls had “decided not to progress their application to operate the branch”.
Residents will still be able to post cards and parcels during the busy festive period as an agreement was reached to keep the existing branch open at Saltford Flowers for the next few weeks.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are committed to providing a Post Office service in Saltford. Original plans to relocate Saltford are not proceeding as the proposed new operator decided not to progress their application.
“The current postmaster agreed to keep the branch open for the time being to ensure the community had a post office at the busiest time of year. The postmaster has now decided to resign.
“Unfortunately the branch is due to close at the current location on December 23. We are looking at ways to try to maintain a post office in Saltford.
“The nearest alternative branches are in Corston (23 Corston Lane), Chandag (39 Chandag Road, Keynsham) and Keynsham (44 High Street).”
