Keynsham's new - almost finished - clocktower unveiled to the community

Published on: 19 Sep 2015

Crowds gathered on Saturday, September 19, to watch the unveiling of the long-awaited new clocktower for Keynsham.

Despite setbacks in the final phases of construction, which meant only one of the clock faces had been installed by the time the official ceremony got under way, the three-sided column with images inspired by the town's history and community of today was ready for people to take a close look at the artwork to which many of them had contributed.

Shirley Janes, 81, and four-and-a-half-year-old Oliver Sheppard, both Keynsham residents, cut the ribbon at the ceremony after speeches from artist Sebastien Boyesen and chair of Keynsham Town Council Lisa O'Brien.

A beautiful example of modern art capturing the history of the town. Its smart, innovative and at the same time looks like its been part of the centre for centuries.

Who is responsible for replacing Keynsham's iconic ‘art-decoesque’ 1960's clock tower with this diminutive teletubby periscope festooned in garish yellow and brown flowers, reminiscent of 1970’s wallpaper? What happened to Sebastien Boyesen's original striking and elegant design, which revealed the inner mechanics of the clockworks beneath a sumptuous stained glass exterior? Please tell me that this is a prank and that the real clock tower is yet to be unveiled.
