Keynsham woman, 82, foils distraction burglar

An elderly Keynsham woman has been praised  by police after foiling a would-be distraction burglar's attempt to get into her home.

The resident was approached by a man who at first offered to carry her shopping bags, then claimed he was from the council, sent to carry out work at her property.

The quick-thinking 82-year-old demanded to see his ID and the man gave up and walked away.

Det Sgt Andy Hodges, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "The woman was immediately suspicious and refused to let the man help her carry her shopping into her house.

"When he changed his story and said he'd been sent by the council to do some gardening, she quite rightly demanded to see proof of his identity - which of course he didn't have. He eventually gave up and walked away towards Queens Road, and the woman called the police."

The incident happened at around 4.30pm on Monday October 22 outside the woman's terraced home in Keynsham.

The man is described as white, wearing a black jacket with badges and dark trousers. He is in his 20s, of slim build and around 5ft 2ins tall, with dark curly hair swept back and a moustache.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them on 101 or via http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact/crime_reporting/
