Community's votes help Saltford pupils enjoy great outdoors

Pupils at a Saltford school are now learning about the natural world in the best possible place – outside.
Saltford C of E Primary School received a £25,000 Community Award from financial mutual OneFamily’s charitable foundation and has created an outdoor classroom with the cash.
The school was nominated for the award by school governor and OneFamily customer Megan Jackson and was then put on a shortlist, with the public asked to vote for their favourite project.
With families and the community getting behind the bid, the school received the most votes and was named the winner.
Samantha Honeybell, Early Years Leader and teacher at Saltford C of E Primary School, said: “Outdoor learning is extremely beneficial for young children as it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle and helps them to understand the natural world.
“The new outdoor area will have an impact on our pupils for many years to come, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone in the local community who voted for us and made the project possible.”
The school unveiled the new outdoor classroom last month and former pupil Georgina Smith, who is now managing director at OneFamily Lifetime Mortgages, joined the celebration.
Georgina said: “It’s great to come back to my old school and celebrate with the staff and pupils. Enjoying the great outdoors is a huge part of children’s lives, and the new outdoor play area will provide the children at Saltford C of E Primary School with a fantastic learning experience.
“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit causes close to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.”
OneFamily aims to make £5 million available to its customers through its foundation to help improve their lives or to make a positive difference to their local communities.
