Local artists have brought a much-needed splash of colour to an empty shop in Keynsham’s Market Walk.

Art Space, a pop-up shop, opened its doors on Wednesday, November 25, to offer shoppers the chance to buy local artwork and crafts.

Around 15 artists are involved in the initiative, which will see the items displayed regularly changing in the run-up to Christmas as different people exhibit their work.

Alongside paintings, cards, ceramics, jewellery and other pieces, there will also be live demonstrations by some of the artists and the chance to see the ongoing restoration of Keynsham’s mosaics in action.

The initiative has been led by Keynsham Town Council, which along with Bath and North East Somerset Council has provided funding, with town councillors Judith Cron and Zoe Wilkins co-ordinating the project.

Zoe, who is also chair of Keynsham Chamber of Commerce, said the idea for a pop-up shop came from discussions at a meeting of the town council’s arts committee.

She said: “I’ve always wanted a pop-up shop in Keynsham and with the focus of the Winter Festival at this end of the town nobody wanted empty space, so we were all thinking the same thing.

“The response from artists has been fantastic and people are still getting in touch now asking to exhibit and to say they would be interested in taking part if we did this again.

“This is good for the town as it creates a bit of a buzz and brings a bit of colour to this area.”

Chair of Keynsham Town Council Lisa O’Brien said: “We are delighted we have the opportunity to showcase the considerable artistic talent in Keynsham and the surrounding area. We hope that, while this is only for a short period in the run-up to Christmas, it will show the way forward to perhaps a more permanent creative arts gallery.

“I think this will also make people realise what a tremendous location this is and adds to the draw of Market Walk.”

Two of the exhibitors present for the shop’s opening day were Diane Davies and John Chivers, who have both previously taken part in the Roundabout Arts Trail in Keynsham and Saltford.

Diane said: “This is the perfect location and has such great windows so people can see what’s going on inside – it will draw people to this end of Keynsham.”

Art Space is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm until December 23.
